Allergy Test
It’s essential to perform a skin allergy test 48 hours before you color your hair. This is the rule even if you’ve previously used a haircolor product. Allergies can develop suddenly, even though you’ve been coloring your hair for some time. Skin allergy test instructions are included in the instructional guide inside your box of haircolor.
What’s Permanent Haircolor?
Changes the natural color of hair and does not wash out. Generally lightens hair up to two levels and easily covers gray.
Before You Color
Tips for getting ready
Pamper Your Locks
When your hair is in top condition, the color will be more predictable, “take” more easily, look more dimensional, and last longer. To get ready for coloring, indulge your hair with a deep-conditioning treatment a few days before you process it. This is especially important if your hair is naturally dry. Conditioner will help protect your locks from chemical damage and will infuse them with softness and healthy shine. Continue with EverPure Sulfate-Free Color Care throughout your color cycle to protect your new shade and to hydrate your locks.
Keep Natural Oils In
Wash your hair the day before, not the day of, coloring. Doing this enables the natural oils in your scalp to act as a buffer when you are applying haircolor or lightener.
Know the Chemistry
If you just colored your hair but want to change your look, it’s best to wait at least two weeks before coloring again. This period gives your hair a break from the chemicals and helps prevent damage; it also gives you an opportunity to condition and deep-treat your hair before another application.
Henna and Haircolor
If your hair has been colored with henna, it’s best to wait until it grows out completely and is cut off before coloring it with permanent, chemically based haircolor. Applying haircolor over henna-colored hair can produce unpredictable results. Henna is not compatible with chemically based haircolor.
Relaxer, Texturizer, or Perm
If your hair has been relaxed, texturized, or permed, wait two weeks before applying haircolor again. Also, read the L’Oréal product instructions to learn of any cautions or tips.
Be Prepared
Before you start, make sure to read and follow all the instructions on product packaging. Perform a skin-allergy test 48 hours before you are planning to apply haircolor, even if you’ve never had an allergic reaction to haircolor. New allergies can develop suddenly, without warning. Do a strand test by applying color to a small section of hair before covering your whole head. This will give you an idea of how long to keep on the color mixture in order to achieve your desired results. It will also give you a preview of what your hair will look like.

Colorants & How They Work
An inside look at the science of haircolor
All permanent and nonpermanent haircolors are made up of two basic ingredients: a developer and colorants. But how do they actually work? Take a crash course on the coloring process and find out how L’Oréal formulas give you gorgeous, lasting color.
Developer
The developer is an oxidizing agent. It activates the colorants and allows them to penetrate the hair cuticle, creating just the right tint. If you are lightening your hair, the developer activates the lighteners as well as the colorants.
Colorants
The colorants are pigments that infuse your hair with color. By reacting with the developer, the colorants are able to separate and coat your locks. All permanent and nonpermanent haircolors can darken and change your tone; however, only permanent colors can also lighten your natural color.
Conditioner
All L’Oréal haircolors provide you with a deeply nourishing conditioner. These protect the hair from breakage and dullness. They also help seal in your color to make it last. Conditioners are important to boost hair’s manageability while adding shine and bounce to your newly colored strands.
